A hand reached into Julia’s chest and twisted her heart in a tight fist. Denise’s plea for help spoke directly to her soul, and her natural instinct was to agree to help immediately, but a voice, louder than it had ever been before, demanded she calm down and think logically. She had made a promise to herself for good reason.
“Denise, I—”
“Please, Julia.” Denise dove forward and grabbed Julia’s hands. “I need help from the best of the best. Otherwise, I don’t know what’s going to happen to me. I’m scared, Julia. I’m so scared.”
The hand tightened further around Julia’s heart, threatening to burst it. The voice in the back of her mind quietened a little, but it was still there, and it was intense. Julia sighed, not sure she could look the poor woman in the eye and turn down such a raw plea.
“Can I take some time to think about it?” Julia found herself asking.
Denise’s eyes lit up as if Julia had already agreed to help. She nodded wildly and scrambled in her pockets for a tatty business card with frayed edges.
“That’s the farm’s landline number,” she said, closing Julia’s hand around it. “Call day or night and ask for Denise. Thank you, Julia. Thank you so much.”
Julia nodded, unsure of what else to say. Denise, on the other hand, had heard enough. She headed for the gate, glancing back at Julia with a grateful smile before hurrying up the lane towards the farm.
“How could I say no to that?” Julia whispered to herself as she tucked the card into her pocket.
More for the sake of clearing her mind, Julia left her cottage behind and set off down the lane as the night entirely replaced the day. She had no chance of catching up, but she could at least do a little more than she had yesterday, and, hopefully, by the time she was ready to go home, she would know exactly how to let Denise down gently…
