Dead in the Water (Scarlet Cove Seaside Cozy Mystery Book 1) Page 14

Instead of letting her take it from him, he fed it to her, his fingers brushing softly against her lips as a nervous smile spread across his blushing face.

“It’s really good,” she mumbled through the mouthful. “Oh, and there’s the spice.”

He chuckled like a schoolboy before tossing one down to Paddy, who caught it with an expert bite. In his white shirt and bowtie, and with his golden hair gelled back, Simon looked more handsome than ever, and she was no longer afraid to admit that to herself.

“Have I told you how beautiful you look yet?” he said, his voice husky and soothing. “Because you do.”

Liz parted her lips to speak, but she did not know what to say. Simon edged closer, his dazzling eyes locking with hers. Butterflies circled in her stomach, letting her know this was what she wanted. She closed her eyes and waited for Simon’s lips to brush against hers, but Paddy’s loud bark separated them.

They both laughed awkwardly for a moment as Liz’s face turned as bright red as Simon’s. She crouched down and scratched behind Paddy’s ears, the moment gone.

“I should get back,” he said, pulling on the door. “The cheese won’t hand itself out.”

Liz nodded her understanding and waited for Simon to slip back inside before leaning against the wall and exhaling once more, but for a different reason. The door opened again, and Liz jumped up, expecting to see Simon, a little disappointed to see Nancy.

“There you are,” Nancy said breathlessly. “We’re out of bags, and I don’t know which box to look in. Oh, Liz. You’re bright red. Is everything okay?”

“Everything is fine,” Liz said, meaning every word. “Everything is completely fine. C’mon, I’ll show you.”

Liz walked back into the storeroom and dodged past one of the waiters to grab a fresh box of plastic bags. She followed Nancy back into the shop, and it somehow looked even busier than before.

Liz caught Simon’s gaze in the crowd, and they shared a warm smile for a moment. She decided she was going to enjoy her new life in Scarlet Cove very much indeed.
